About us

Two people, one project

Koreanischkurs is not a publishing house and not an app. Two people are behind it, working since 2020 on explaining Korean clearly: Hyunok Jang and Gerhard Reus.

How it started

In the summer of 2020 there were no classes in person any more. So Hyunok recorded eight videos about the Korean alphabet, so her own students could keep practising at home. Before long it was not only them learning from the videos, but people across the whole German-speaking world.

Eight videos became a channel, the channel became a book, the book became three. Then came the eLearning, the live classes and the shop. None of it was planned. It grew because people kept asking whether the same thing existed as a book, as a course, or as one ordered path from the beginning to the end.

How we teach

We do not promise a shortcut. Learning Korean takes time, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something.

What we do instead is build a solid base. Hangul first, because the Korean alphabet is easier than its reputation and because everything else rests on it. Then lesson by lesson, each one on top of the last. We split similar grammar points apart on purpose so they do not blur together, and we repeat more than a textbook normally would.

And we tell you when something is hard. Politeness and particles, for instance, are things you need from the very beginning and will not fully understand at the beginning. That is fine. Using the language matters more than understanding all of it.

The two of us

Who does what

Hyunok Jang

Hyunok teaches. She is from Korea, lives in Salzburg, and has been teaching Korean for more than twenty years. She is the teacher in the videos, in the books and in the eLearning, and after twenty years she knows exactly where German-speaking learners get stuck.

Gerhard Reus

Gerhard builds the rest: the sites, the eLearning, the books as books, and the machinery underneath. In the lessons he is the voice that asks, so that Hyunok can explain.

The company

k-jang OG

Behind all of it is k-jang OG, a general partnership registered in Salzburg, Austria. It belongs to Hyunok and Gerhard in equal parts. The company publishes the books, runs the sites and issues the invoices. That is all it is, and all it needs to be.

The full company details are in the Impressum, in German.
